Young Malaysians seek better jobs, affordable homes

Young Malaysians are seeking better job prospects and affordable housing as they prepare for adulthood, according to a report in the New Straits Times. The rising cost of living, particularly in goods, rent, transport, and daily necessities, is a major concern for this generation, making it difficult for them to secure financial stability.

For example, Nik Nur Iman Wahyu Nik Azwadi, a 24-year-old Universiti Teknologi Mara student, expressed her hope that the next five years would bring more employment opportunities and salaries that match the skills of young Malaysians. She also wished for more affordable housing options and financial independence for young people.

Another intern, Khairul Danish Alif Khairul Azma, emphasized the need for the government to create more jobs and improve starting salaries for new graduates, as many are struggling to find work despite holding university degrees. He also called for a fairer job market, where graduates receive equal opportunities to secure employment without relying on personal connections.

Additionally, Khairul raised concerns about the government's handling of foreign nationals, suggesting the need for stronger monitoring and enforcement to ensure they do not negatively impact public order or local communities. Youth-based non-governmental organization Mandiri representative Alyaah Hani highlighted the importance of tackling corruption and leakages in the system, as they affect public funds and resources meant for education, healthcare, public transport, housing, and employment opportunities.

Alyaah also advocated for progressive taxation and free, quality public education to create a fairer society.
