Why Henry Winkler Rejected ABC's Plan To Rename Happy Days After Fonzie

During an appearance on In Depth With Graham Bensinger, Henry Winkler, who played Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli on the classic ABC sitcom Happy Days, revealed that he had stopped the network from renaming the show after his character. During the conversation, ABC founder Leonard Goldenson visited Winkler's dressing room with a proposition to rename the show "Fonzie's Happy Days."

Winkler firmly declined, explaining that the show was already doing well in ratings and that renaming it would be a slap in the face. He also rejected Goldenson's idea for a spin-off focused on Fonzie, stating that he was content being part of the larger Happy Days cast and was not sure if he could establish chemistry with new cast members.

Winkler's growing popularity led to him becoming the ostensible main character of the show, causing Ron Howard, who played the original lead Richie Cunningham, to feel hurt about the shifting dynamics. Howard even threatened to quit the show if it had been renamed "Fonzie's Happy Days." Winkler, however, sensed Howard's emotions and recalled a conversation where Howard opened up to him, expressing that the name change would hurt his feelings.

Winkler acknowledged that the name change would negatively affect their relationship and the show's success, leading him to firmly reject the proposal.
