Why exclude Transport, Interior Ministers from anti-narcotics meeting – Hon. Sammi Awuku

The government has revised the list of attendees for a meeting on border security and narcotics in response to criticisms from Minority MP Sammi Awuku. Awuku argued that the original invitation did not include ministers responsible for key agencies involved in the fight against drug trafficking, such as the Ghana Maritime Authority, Ghana Shippers Authority and Ghana Airports Company Limited, which fall under the Ministry of Transport, and the Ghana Police Service and Narcotics Control Commission, both under the Ministry of the Interior.

The MP stated that the government had made the necessary corrections to the invitation list and welcomed the change, emphasizing that his initial criticism aimed to promote accountability rather than criticize the administration. Awuku highlighted the importance of including ministers directly responsible for these institutions to ensure proper oversight and accountability.

He emphasized that the fight against drug trafficking is a matter that transcends partisan politics and stressed the need for effective coordination among the agencies responsible for combating drug trafficking. The government's adjustment of the meeting's invitation list comes as there is growing concern over Ghana's vulnerability to being used as a transit point for illicit drugs, necessitating a coordinated effort among the relevant agencies.
