WFP-Korea programme strengthens local economy and builds resilience in Northern Ghana

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), supported by the Republic of Korea, is working in northern Ghana to boost local economies and improve the resilience of vulnerable communities that have been impacted by severe drought. Since its inception, the program has assisted over 33,000 individuals through a combination of cash assistance, nutrition support, and livelihood diversification initiatives.

Unlike traditional food aid programs, this intervention leverages local market systems, enabling beneficiaries to purchase food at local retail shops using food vouchers. This approach has stimulated local business activity, increased demand for locally produced food, and strengthened market links between farmers, traders, and consumers. Retailers involved in the program, such as Mr. Nantogma in Kumbungu District, have reported significant benefits, including increased sales and plans to expand their business.

The initiative not only addresses immediate food needs but also stimulates local economies by sourcing food supplies from local farmers and wholesalers, thus creating a market for agricultural products. Additionally, the program has supported beneficiaries to diversify their income sources through various income-generating activities, such as soap making, shea butter processing, pastry production, and small livestock rearing. This diversification helps households build resilience against future climate shocks.

Furthermore, the program promotes social cohesion by ensuring transparent and inclusive beneficiary selection processes, with a focus on women, persons with disabilities, and marginalized ethnic groups like the Fulbe communities. This partnership between WFP and the Republic of Korea aims to rebuild livelihoods, support local businesses, and foster stronger, more resilient communities in northern Ghana, addressing the challenges posed by erratic rainfall patterns and prolonged dry spells.
