US has deployed a space weapon, air force secretary says

The United States has officially deployed a space weapon in Earth's orbit, marking the first time the nation has acknowledged possessing such offensive capabilities, according to US Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink. Meink made the announcement at the Air, Space and Cyber Conference on Monday, stating that the on-orbit weapon is essential for safeguarding US forces against hostile enemy action. However, he did not provide further details regarding the weapon's specific capabilities or the timeline of its deployment.

The deployment of the space weapon comes as the US acknowledges evolving threats in space, a concern highlighted by senior military leaders who plan to enhance military capabilities in space. This decision is also influenced by the activities of Russia and China, which have developed programs aimed at attacking and disrupting US satellites in the event of a future conflict.

The Trump administration has emphasized that space-based capabilities, including interceptor missiles, are crucial components of its planned "Golden Dome" defense system designed to protect the US from missiles and other airborne threats.

The deployment of the space weapon is not without controversy. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty prohibits the placement of weapons of mass destruction in orbit. Nevertheless, major powers such as the US, Russia, and China have been exploring other capabilities outside the treaty, including targeting rivals' satellites, which are vital for military communications, surveillance, and navigation.

In 2022, it was revealed that two Russian satellites had likely interfered with the communications of at least a dozen European satellites following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. These interceptions could have allowed Russian intelligence services to access sensitive data or hypothetically take control of the satellites.

Additionally, the US Space Force, the newest branch of the US military established in 2019, revealed that it employs both kinetic and non-kinetic means to affect adversary capabilities through disruption, degradation, and destruction if necessary. This includes offensive and defensive purposes at the direction of combatant commands.

In early 2024, the US claimed that Russia had launched a satellite potentially capable of attacking other probes. However, Russia has not publicly addressed these allegations. The US Space Force asserts that China also develops and operates space and counterspace capabilities as part of its military modernization strategy, while Russia views space as a warfighting domain, believing space supremacy will be a decisive factor in future conflicts.
