US Democrats demand answers on Trump Jr.’s ties with Russian oligarch

House Democrats have urged Donald Trump Jr. to maintain all records and communications pertaining to his association with Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch who allegedly financed parts of the Trump Jr.'s wedding festivities in the Bahamas. Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), who chairs the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, has also requested any White House communications regarding financial contributions or attendance at the Trump family's recent wedding events.

The letters were a response to a ProPublica report uncovering Kremlev's substantial expenditures on a private island and the fireworks display for the wedding.

While Politico has not independently verified the reported payments, claims linked to Trump Jr.'s wife indicate a possible confirmation. "As the son of President Donald Trump and part-owner of numerous companies with significant Department of Defense contracts, your endorsement of such an 'extraordinarily generous wedding gift' from a member of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s inner circle raises serious questions about pay-to-play schemes and foreign intelligence infiltration of the President’s family," Garcia wrote to the president’s son.

A spokesperson for Trump Jr. has yet to provide a response to inquiries. In his letter to the White House, Garcia inquired about the White House's knowledge of Trump Jr.’s "friendly relationship" with Kremlev and whether Kremlev's presence influenced President Donald Trump's decision not to attend the wedding. President Trump claimed ignorance about Kremlev, stating he had never heard of him, and that Kremlev did not pay for the Trumps' wedding, which occurred at a distinct location on a separate day. The president added that the gathering was merely an "afterparty" hosted in their honor.

Kremlev, the president of the International Boxing Association, has been awarded the Order of Friendship medal by Russian President Vladimir Putin for his contributions to international sport and commitment to the global boxing community. The Ukrainian government has sanctioned Kremlev due to his close ties to Putin and Russian intelligence agencies.

The eldest son of President Trump and influencer Bettina Anderson exchanged vows in May at a ceremony in Palm Beach County, Florida, followed by a private post-wedding celebration in the Bahamas, attended by other Trump family members and Kremlev. Bettina Trump emphasized in a statement that the Bahamas festivities were "planned well in advance as a fun weekend with friends" and criticized the political connotations surrounding the wedding gift.
