US confirms it has weapons in spaaaaaace

The US Space Force has placed space control weapons into orbit, though the agency has not disclosed the specifics of these weapons or how they were obtained. According to US Air Force Secretary Troy Meink, who addressed the Air and Space Forces Association conference, the United States has deployed weaponry around Earth. The nature and origin of these weapons remain a mystery, and there is no information on their launch.

Classified launches have occurred frequently, and the US also operates the X-37 program, which involves two uncrewed X-37B spaceplanes capable of spending years in orbit for undisclosed purposes. Though inquiries to officials about the weapons have not yet been answered, potential options include jamming satellite communications, disabling electronics with a pulse, or a more destructive, ballistic or kinetic weapon.

The latter possibility could generate debris, leading to the Kessler Syndrome – a cascade of space debris that could render orbital space unusable. The Outer Space Treaty, which went into effect in 1967, prohibits weapons of mass destruction in space, but nations have found ways to circumvent it. Previous examples include the Soviet Union's Salyut 3 station, fitted with a self-defense gun, and the United States' Strategic Defense Initiative, or Star Wars, aimed at intercepting ballistic missiles.

The current US administration's Golden Dome plan involves a constellation of satellites with detection and interception capabilities. China's foreign ministry spokesperson expressed concern, urging the US to refrain from expanding its military capabilities and preparing for war in outer space. Shortly before Meink's statement, the BRICS nations called for preventing an arms race and weaponization in outer space, as well as threats or the use of force against objects in space, in the New Delhi Declaration.
