Trump dismisses AI safety fears as a hoax, rejects calls for tighter controls

United States President Donald Trump dismissed concerns about the safety of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a "hoax." He criticized calls for stricter controls over the rapidly advancing technology. This came after Jack Clark, co-founder of AI company Anthropic, suggested implementing a mandatory "kill switch" for dangerous AI, overseen by an independent third party.

Clark's comments followed warnings from executives and staff at major AI firms about the technology's potential risks to humanity. These warnings prompted a market reaction, with shares of some tech firms experiencing a sell-off on Monday. Trump likened AI safety warnings to the "Global Warming Scam," a conspiracy he claimed was "perpetuated by the Radical Left Democrats."

He also called himself "the Hoax Buster," drawing parallels between the alleged collusion against AI and the "RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA HOAX." Trump maintained that the only "guardrails" needed for AI were a "strong and smart" president. Professor Xin Qiang of Fudan University noted that China's rapid AI development has become a growing threat to the United States, with Beijing worried that slower progress or tighter regulations could enable the US to fall behind.
