Titus Glover cautions against Laboma demolitions, warns of job losses

Former Greater Accra Regional Minister Titus Glover has expressed worry over the demolition of buildings in the Laboma area of the Kpeshie Lagoon. He fears this could lead to serious economic and social issues. The removal of structures happened on September 13th, as part of a broader government plan to clear waterways and reduce flooding in certain parts of Greater Accra.

Mr Glover thinks the government should have sought other ways to solve the problem first, especially when large private investments and jobs are at stake. He pointed out that the destruction of resorts and other businesses on Laboma Beach could lead to job losses and erase years of private investment. In an interview with Citi FM, the ex-minister asked the government to be more understanding towards affected businesses and residents.

“We need to see this from a human perspective,” he said. Government cannot create jobs, he noted. There are many job-seekers, particularly young people and recent graduates. Public sector jobs are limited, so private businesses are vital for creating employment. “If the only option is to demolish, then we have a problem,” he added.

However, Glover clarified that his opposition is not to the government's overall plan to clear waterways. He supported efforts to remove buildings that block waterways to safeguard communities from floods. Nonetheless, he stressed that while such demolitions are necessary, authorities should also think about the economic impact on genuine businesses and those whose incomes depend on them.
