EU approves $115 million to turn Baltic port near Russia into NATO naval hub

On September 15, the European Investment Bank (EIB) approved a €100 million ($115 million) loan to transform the Baltic Sea port of Klaipeda into a NATO naval hub, the bank announced. As the EU's lending institution, the EIB has recently expanded its portfolio to bolster the region's defense capabilities and continue supporting Ukraine.

Klaipeda, located just 50 kilometers north of Russia's Kaliningrad exclave, is strategically positioned along the Baltic Sea coast, a three-and-a-half-hour drive from the EU and NATO's eastern border. EIB Vice-President Karl Nehammer emphasized how the port project exemplifies Europe's priorities. The renovated port will enable NATO ships to dock, enhancing the defense of the Eastern Flank.

As part of the EU's TEN-T transport network, Klaipeda's port is among ten strategically important transcontinental routes set for development by 2030. While some projects, like the Rail Baltica linking Baltic capitals, face delays, the EIB's funding for Klaipeda covers 80% of the €201 million ($232 million) project cost, with the remaining funds sourced from EU and national contributions.
