They are responsible citizens, not kidnappers – Lawyer defends suspects in alleged MoMo fraudster abduction

The lawyer representing four individuals in custody over the alleged abduction of a 30-year-old man has vehemently denied his clients are kidnappers, describing them instead as responsible citizens who themselves fell victim to mobile money fraud. Godlove Tinkorang Agyei pointed out that the accounts provided by his clients conflict with the version presented by law enforcement.

"My clients' statements differ from what the police are alleging. My clients are not kidnappers," he affirmed. According to the lawyer, his clients were cheated out of GH¢24,800 from a mobile money account and an additional GH¢20,000 from an Ecobank account after being duped by callers impersonating the sender of a mistaken transfer and later as an MTN official.

Consequently, they attempted to retrieve their funds by luring the man to one of their residences. He vehemently denied the police's claims that the suspects sought to dispose of the victim or that a vehicle was engaged. "There was no car, and there were no plans to abandon him, as the police claimed in their statement," Agyei asserted.

He stressed that his clients, who have no criminal history, acted solely to retrieve the funds they had lost. "My clients have no criminal background. They are responsible citizens," he insisted.
