Tech CEOs call for AI regulation. Trump and Congress are not rushing to act

The technology industry's warnings about the potential risks of artificial intelligence (AI) are encountering significant political resistance in Washington, raising questions about the government's ability to address a key issue of the era. Tech leaders including Anthropic's Dario Amodei, OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk of xAI have been vocal about the need for greater government oversight of AI.

However, President Donald Trump has dismissed these calls as a "conspiracy" and other leading Republicans have expressed caution. Democrats are pushing for a stronger response, with Sen. Bernie Sanders hosting a briefing with experts on the topic.

The lack of a unified response from the federal government highlights a growing disconnect between the tech sector's warnings and the federal government's actions. Max Stier, president of the nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service, warns that delay in addressing AI risks could prove very costly. Despite the partisan divide, there are some exceptions, with a Washington AI conference featuring speakers from both sides of the aisle.

Sen. Josh Hawley has already opened an investigation into OpenAI, but broader regulation has been slow to materialize. The Biden administration has called for lawmakers to develop policies, but Congress has a history of being reluctant to regulate the technology industry. A bipartisan working group on AI formed by then-Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer recommended a $32 billion investment over three years to develop AI and implement safeguards, but there has been little follow-through on this recommendation.

The AI debate underscores the challenges Congress faces in tackling complex issues, even when there is a general consensus that more guardrails are needed.
