Sunyani, Kwahu Obomeng get customary land secretariats to improve transparency and land records

The Sunyani Traditional Area in the Bono Region and Kwahu Obomeng in the Eastern Region have recently established Customary Land Secretariats to enhance the efficient, transparent, and accountable administration of customary lands. This development is part of the government's ongoing efforts, led by the Office of the Administrator of Stool Lands (OASL), to bolster customary land administration and improve land governance across Ghana.

During the inauguration ceremonies, Administrator of Stool Lands, Mr. Gad Asorwoe Akwensivie, praised the traditional leaders of Sunyani and Kwahu Obomeng for their commitment to responsible land administration and their willingness to blend customary practices with contemporary systems. Mr. Akwensivie emphasized that land is a vital resource for national development; however, poor management can hinder progress and escalate conflicts.

He highlighted that with approximately 80% of land in Ghana owned under customary ownership, traditional leaders bear a significant responsibility to manage these lands in the best interest of present and future generations. The Customary Land Secretariats will serve as crucial tools in improving land administration at the community level.

These secretariats will maintain land records, document land rights, record land transactions, and provide transparent information to the public, especially investors. The initiative aims to reduce land disputes, secure property rights, and promote orderly land use planning. Currently, over 100 Customary Land Secretariats operate across Ghana, facilitating collaboration between traditional authorities and state institutions involved in land administration, such as the Office of the Administrator of Stool Lands, the Lands Commission, LUSPA, the National Development Planning Authority, and various land-based non-governmental organizations.

Mr. Akwensivie urged the secretariat staff and Land Management Committee members to maintain integrity, professionalism, and accountability in their work. He emphasized the importance of earning and maintaining the trust of the people. Residents of Sunyani and Kwahu Obomeng are encouraged to utilize the services provided by the new secretariats.

The government remains committed to supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening customary land administration, assuring the traditional authorities of continuous support from the Office of the Administrator of Stool Lands and other entities.
