Republicans and Democrats Unite to Rename Airport for Dolly Parton

Republican and Democratic officials in Nashville have reached an unexpected agreement to rename Nashville International Airport in honor of country music legend Dolly Parton. The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority voted unanimously on September 11 to begin the renaming process following Parton's death on August 25 at age 80. While the final name has yet to be determined, the proposal has garnered support from the state's Republican governor, Bill Lee, and the city's Democratic mayor, Freddie O’Connell.

Both Tennessee's Republican-led state government and Nashville's Democratic-run city government have been embroiled in a prolonged dispute over control of the airport authority, which had led to a crisis involving two competing boards. However, the Parton naming proposal has united the two branches of government, as both sides have shown respect for the country music icon's significant contributions to Tennessee.

Parton, born in Sevier County, East Tennessee, is renowned for her career in music, songwriting, acting, and business. Her influence extends to tourism and philanthropy, through her Dollywood Foundation's Imagination Library, which has distributed nearly 200 million books worldwide. Nashville's Metropolitan Council recognized these broader contributions when it requested the airport name change, citing Parton's role in promoting Nashville and Tennessee internationally.

Despite the airport's official name remaining Nashville International Airport for now, the renaming process is expected to take a year or more. Discussions with Parton's estate and the integration of her name into airport branding will be necessary before the official change takes place. The current airport code, BNA, derived from the historical name Berry Field Nashville, will continue to be used in airline reservations, airport operations, and passenger information.
