Following Volkswagen's decision to tighten its cost-cutting measures, an Osnabruck-based economist has warned of potential impacts on personnel recruitment. According to Uwe Kanning of the "Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung," it is not certain that the number of job applications will drop significantly, but rather the quality of those who apply.

As a company's image deteriorates, it becomes increasingly difficult to attract high-performing individuals. Many positions are at risk, with the supervisory board of the auto manufacturer agreeing unanimously on a "Future Plan" during weeks of negotiations. This plan involves reducing production to nine million vehicles per year and increasing operational revenue per unit to nine percent.

Management, led by CEO Oliver Blume, now has the mandate to restructure the company and cut billions in costs. Globally, around 50,000 jobs are expected to disappear over the coming years, in addition to previous downsizing efforts. The VW plants in Emden, Hannover, Zwickau, and Audi's Neckarsulm site are under pressure to find a competitive business model by 2031 to 2034.

However, a closure has not yet been agreed upon, with alternative uses being tested in parallel. Experts suggest that people handle transparency and honesty better than delaying tactics that lead to ongoing frustration. The expert believes that employees will cope better with openness and sincerity than with a delaying tactic that repeatedly causes frustration.

"Transparency and honesty can help individuals build a positive self-worth and feel pride in their affiliation," Kanning told the newspaper. "This will be jeopardized if companies are portrayed as lagging behind."
