Proceeding with Muhyiddin charges could have jeopardised other cases, says AGC

The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) has defended its decision to discontinue four charges against former Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, saying it could have jeopardised other cases. In a statement, the AGC explained that its professional assessment of the evidence showed proceeding with the charges posed clear litigation risks.

These risks included undermining the strategy and evidentiary case for the remaining charges still faced by Muhyiddin. The AGC stressed that its duty as public prosecutor is to only pursue charges supported by sufficient evidence and capable of being successfully defended in court. DAP chairman Gobind Singh Deo, who is also Malaysia's digital minister, had called for Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar to explain the decision.

Gobind said transparency was crucial given the public's interest in the case and the fact that the trial was nearing its conclusion. He warned that discontinuing high-profile prosecutions without clear justification could erode public confidence in the attorney-general and the criminal justice system.
