Owner of so-called ‘Hillbilly Houseboat’ speaks about invention

Emilio Gilpo, the owner of an unconventional floating home known as the “Hillbilly Houseboat,” is discussing his innovative prototype with Global News. The houseboat, currently being tested on Surrey's Nicomekl River, is a camper trailer placed atop a makeshift barge comprised of 36 round containers and some steel beams. Gilpo explained that he is conducting a "proof of concept" to determine the feasibility of the design. If successful, he aims to refine and enhance the vessel's functionality.

Resident reports indicate that the houseboat was assembled and launched using a crane. Gilpo described the vessel as versatile, usable as both a recreational vehicle and a houseboat. The City of Surrey had previously issued a warning to Gilpo, and a parking ticket was visible on the houseboat's side when it was docked on city land.

Now that it is afloat, Transport Canada will oversee the vessel to ensure it satisfies safety and environmental regulations. Gilpo reassured that his prototype is not hazardous, with empty barrels in the pontoons and only a small generator aboard. He stated that the barge will remain in the water for several days while he makes necessary adjustments and enhancements to the design. A specific timeline for these improvements has not been disclosed.
