Over Sh1 Billion Disbursed to 1,083 Victims of Protests

The Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Human Rights Violations disbursed over Sh1 billion to 1,083 claims, covering fatalities, injuries, sexual violence, economic losses and other forms of harm recognized under the applicable compensation framework. Prof. Makau Mutua, the panel chairperson, stated that each claim underwent verification, authentication and categorisation before a payment decision was made to safeguard the integrity of the process.

The panel had processed 1,083 claims to date, including 139 claims for economic losses, which were settled following supporting evidence such as business records, police records, photographs and witness statements. The panel also approved compensation for human rights violations suffered by uniformed officers, receiving and approving 100 claims from them.

Two claims were reclassified after review of medical reports and submissions, resulting in above-scale compensation for the two victims. The panel continues to engage with victims and beneficiaries through various communication channels and has taken steps to comply with court directives regarding the ring-fencing of Sh105 million for victims of torture and enforced disappearances.

The panel reaffirmed its commitment to delivering the reparations framework and processing claims in Phases IV and V.
