Engineers’ Day to be State event; govt. allows prefix ‘Er’ to names

The Karnataka government declared Engineers Day, commemorating the birth anniversary of Sir M. Visvesvaraya, an official State event on Tuesday. In addition to permitting teachers to use the prefix "Tr.", engineers will now be allowed to use "Er." as a prefix. This decision was made to acknowledge the significant contributions engineers make to the nation's development and economic progress.

The government order came shortly after Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar approved the proposal for the State to officially observe Engineers Day on September 15. The Congress MLC B.S. Shivanna had previously urged the government to permit engineers to use "Er." and lecturers to use "Lr." The Chief Minister emphasized that over one lakh engineers graduate annually in the State, highlighting the importance of recognizing their achievements.

Sir M. Visvesvaraya, a revered technocrat and former Dewan of Mysore Princely State, is revered as a national model, with his contributions to Karnataka being immense.
