ORPP unveils first mandatory 2027 election timelines for political parties

The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) in Kenya has announced the initial compliance deadlines that political parties must adhere to before conducting nominations for the upcoming General Election on August 10, 2027. The roadmap, issued by Registrar John Cox Lorionokou, lays out a series of milestones spanning from this year into 2027, signaling the start of preparations for the upcoming election.

These deadlines follow the IEBC’s official notice confirming Kenya’s next General Election date, emphasizing that these are no longer mere political steps but statutory obligations. The ORPP’s timeline mandates that political parties submit their election and nomination rules to the registrar by October 16, 2026, with the submission window opening on September 28.

By October 30, the registrar must certify these rules, after which parties must forward the certified rules to the IEBC by November 6. Parties must also notify the ORPP of their chosen nomination method and provide details of the dates and locations for nominations ahead of the actual exercise. Another crucial deadline in October is the submission of the names and specimen signatures of authorized officials to both the ORPP and IEBC.

This requirement aims to establish the individuals legally authorized to handle election-related affairs on behalf of political parties. The ORPP has further set deadlines for coalition formations, coalition agreement submissions, and mergers. Parties looking to form a coalition political party must submit their coalition agreement to the Registrar by April 12, 2027, while pre-election coalitions must submit their agreements by May 9, 2027.

Mergers, which involve the combination of parties into a single entity, have a different timeline. Parties considering mergers must submit the merger agreement and required documentation within 21 days of signing the agreement, with a clear separation from the coalition process. Additionally, Kenyan citizens planning to contest the 2027 election as independent candidates face strict deadlines.

Prospective independent candidates who are currently members of political parties must resign by May 8, 2027, allowing time for the submission and certification of their symbols, confirmation of non-membership, and other necessary clearance documents. The entire process, from March to May 2027, involves the submission of membership lists, publication of nomination details, primary elections, and the submission of successful nominees to the IEBC.
