Orihuela Costa Launches Posidonia Awareness Programme

Orihuela City Council has begun a program to raise awareness about the ecological, cultural, and social significance of posidonia and other seagrasses. This initiative aims to explain the crucial role these marine plants play in safeguarding beaches, seabeds, and coastal ecosystems. Through a mix of scientific information and creative activities, the program seeks to deepen the community's connection with the coastline and marine environment.

The event kicks off with a lecture titled "Between Land and Sea: The Hidden World of Seagrasses and Their Traditional Uses," which will be presented by Professor Diego Rivera Núñez, a botany professor from the University of Murcia. The lecture, scheduled for September 16 at 7pm at Campoamor Yacht Club, will delve into the ecological importance of seagrasses and their traditional uses.

Additionally, the program features "Weaving Posidonia," a participatory project consisting of three workshops at the same venue. These sessions combine outdoor experiences, group discussions, and artistic creation, encouraging participants to explore new perspectives on the coastal landscape and share their thoughts, memories, and emotions related to the sea.

The project will conclude with the creation of a collective artwork inspired by posidonia and its role in stabilizing and protecting the seabed. By weaving natural-fiber rope and fabric pieces, participants will represent the plant's rhizomes and leaves, reflecting the discussions and impressions from the workshops. The organizers hope this initiative will promote closer observation of the natural environment, enhance public understanding of posidonia's ecological value, and create opportunities for collective dialogue.

It will also explore the relationship between marine ecosystems and human activity while fostering participants' connections with the local coastline.
