NDC will use misinformation and disinformation to retain power in 2028 – Afenyo-Markin

Former Minority Leader and NPP 2028 flagbearer contender Alexander Afenyo-Markin has cautioned party members to brace for a strategic misinformation and disinformation campaign by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the lead-up to the 2028 elections. In a Facebook post, Afenyo-Markin alleged that the NDC might employ "fake news" and "manufactured distractions" to divert public focus away from the government's shortcomings.

He wrote, "Going into the 2028 elections, one strategy the NDC Government is likely to use aggressively, in its desperation to hold on to power, is misinformation and disinformation." According to Afenyo-Markin, the NDC would aim to shift attention from critical national issues where the government has fallen short. "Expect FAKE NEWS and manufactured distractions aimed at taking attention away from the important national issues on which the Government has failed to deliver," he added.

As a potential NPP candidate for the 2028 general election, Afenyo-Markin urged Ghanaians to critically evaluate political statements and verify claims before accepting them as true. He emphasized that the NDC has a history of leveraging such tactics when in opposition. "This is not new, it is a political tool they have mastered," he stated.

Afenyo-Marking called for vigilance from Ghanaians, urging them to question information presented to them and resist distractions from issues affecting their daily lives. He emphasized that NPP members, officers, and communicators carry a heightened responsibility to verify information and swiftly counter false claims. "NPP members, officers and communicators especially carry an even greater responsibility.

We must remain alert, disciplined and focused," he said. Afenyo-Markin also urged the NPP to concentrate its messaging on the government's performance and alleged breaches of promises, as well as addressing everyday challenges faced by Ghanaians. "Check the facts, expose the lies quickly and never allow false propaganda to dictate our agenda," he advised.

"Keep the focus on the Government’s broken promises and the everyday problems Ghanaians face." He further urged NPP members to champion the vision of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate and a key figure in the party’s preparations for 2028. "Above all, stay on message by promoting Dr Bawumia’s vision for Ghana with clarity and conviction while working relentlessly towards victory in 2028," he advised.

Afenyo-Marking concluded with a direct call to action for the party: "Expose the lies. Focus on the issues. Promote the vision. Win 2028." The former Minority Leader’s remarks were made well ahead of the 2028 general election, as both the NPP and the NDC prepare for the upcoming presidential and parliamentary contest.
