Muslims in Germany are being squeezed from both right and left

Muslims in Germany are facing pressure from both the far-right and the political center, leading to a political vacuum that weakens their position in the country's democracy. Following the impressive victory of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Saxony-Anhalt, Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) suffered a significant defeat, while the Social Democrats remained in the low single digits.

Centrist parties attempted to neutralize the far-right by adopting their rhetoric, but this strategy proved ineffective. Instead, mainstream parties have treated Muslim minorities as an inherent civic liability, abandoning the democratic firewall they claim to protect. The squeeze comes from both sides, with the far-right demanding the forced departure of Muslims and the democratic center viewing their presence as a security threat.

This hardline stance began in September 2024 under the Social Democratic federal interior minister, Nancy Faeser, who imposed tight border controls and raised the stakes on migration issues. Mainstream politicians now routinely blame migrant communities for public disorder, treating integration as a disciplinary exercise rather than an equal civic contract.

As a result, Muslim communities in Germany are feeling politically homeless, with their constitutional rights being questioned in mainstream political debates.
