Matunga Flower Merchants To Spend ₹10 Lakh On Floral Ganpati Decorations, With Four Themes Planned Over 12 Days

Mumbai's Matunga area is renowned for its garland makers, who plan to invest nearly Rs 10 lakh on floral decorations for their Ganpati idol during the 12-day festival this year. The floral arrangements will change four times, each with a distinct theme. The Matunga Flower Merchants Association, in its 54th year of celebrating the Ganesh festival, has enlisted six decorators from Salem district in Tamil Nadu, specialists in temple decorations, for the elaborate floral displays.

R Arumugam, the association's secretary, noted that Lord Ganesha will be present for 12 days, as Anant Chaturdashi falls on September 25. "Our Ganapathy is the most popular in this area, as we change the decoration with flowers four times, each with a different theme," he said.

Each decoration will utilize around 250 kg of various flower varieties, according to P Subbaiah, owner of Sankaracharya Flower Shop and president of the association, who works with the decorators. The cost of flowers alone for the 12-day festival is projected to be approximately Rs 10 lakh, with the overall celebration expenses surpassing Rs 15 lakh.

The association's 45 merchants collectively cover the expenses, as the festival does not receive donations, Subbaiah explained. The festivities are a staple of Matunga's vibrant Ganesh festival, featuring several idols over six feet tall and pandals scattered almost every 100 meters.
