Malaysia tightens cargo regulations, detains containers bound for Israel passing through its port

Malaysian authorities have intensified controls on cargo passing through its ports, particularly those destined for Israel, according to a report by Bloomberg. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced on his X/Twitter account that Malaysia will not permit the use of its territory to facilitate shipments supporting Israel's military actions or its attacks on Palestinians and innocent individuals.

Any shipment deemed suspicious will be subject to thorough inspection and investigation, with decisive action taken if a violation is found. Three containers carrying electric bicycle parts from Chinese manufacturer Chongqing Mobimax Technology were detained at Tanjung Pelepas Port in mid-August, and another shipment, intended for Elbit Systems, was stopped on August 7 but remains at the port.

These actions come two weeks after Malaysia banned Israeli shipping company ZIM from using its ports. Malaysia, a Muslim-majority nation, has become increasingly vocal in its pro-Palestinian stance since the beginning of the war in Gaza in October 2023, leading to widespread protests and consumer boycotts. The detention of these containers, which passed through Malaysia as part of transit routes, may indicate a more stringent application of the country's customs laws and a broader enforcement of its policy against supporting Israel.
