Mahama commissions Zonda Tec’s new assembly plant in Tema

President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the third phase of Zonda Tec Ghana Assembly Plant in Tema, marking a significant step in Ghana's industrial growth. Speaking at the commissioning on September 15, 2026, Mahama emphasized that Ghana's prosperity hinges on producing more for domestic consumption and boosting the export of locally manufactured goods.

He highlighted how investments like Zonda Tec's assembly plant demonstrate confidence in Ghana's economy and its people, while generating employment opportunities for both current and future generations. "The growth of Zonda Tec is a remarkable Ghanaian success story," Mahama stated, noting that the company has evolved from a vehicle distributor in 2010 to the leading assembler of heavy-duty vehicles, SUVs, and small cars in Ghana.

The expansion, according to Mahama, showcases the potential when private investments are supported by a conducive business environment and a clear industrial policy. He stressed the importance of local manufacturing in reducing import reliance, generating employment, and retaining more value within the economy. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, revealed that the third phase has expanded Zonda Tec's annual production capacity to around 3,000 vehicles.

This enhancement, she said, solidifies Ghana's position as a dependable automotive assembly hub in the sub-region. The Minister emphasized that this growth aligns with the government's industrialization strategy to attract investment, generate jobs, promote technology transfer, and increase local value addition. The recently approved Ghana Automotive Component Manufacturing Policy aims to further bolster the sector by encouraging investments in component production for both aftermarket and direct supply to local assembly plants.

Ofosu-Adjare expressed the government's commitment to fostering a competitive, resilient, and export-oriented automotive industry, positioning Ghana as a key manufacturing center in West Africa. Zonda Tec initially started as a vehicle distributor in 2010 before transitioning into vehicle assembly. The company's CEO, Madam Yang Yang, expressed her belief that Ghana has evolved from a mere business destination into a place she considers her second home.

She emphasized that this transformation led Zonda Tec to move beyond vehicle trading, spare parts, and after-sales services into local assembly. Yang Yang stressed that the company's investment in Ghana is driven by a desire to create jobs, train local workforce, and retain more value within the country.
