Kempton Park deaths: Stop social media feeding frenzy

Simon Lapping, a Kempton Park ward councillor, has called for a cooling off period amid a surge of social media speculation following the discovery of multiple women's bodies in his community. The DA councillor explained that while the community's concern is understandable, unverified claims and rumors on social media platforms could exacerbate the already tense situation.

Several women have been found dead in recent months, and the discovery of another woman's body in KwaThema on Monday has only intensified public anxiety. Police are investigating the cases and exploring potential connections between the incidents. Lapping emphasized the importance of allowing law enforcement to do their work and urged residents to refrain from making unsubstantiated allegations on social media.

He stressed that information that could aid investigators should be directed to the South African Police Service (SAPS) first, rather than shared on Facebook, WhatsApp groups, or other online channels. The councillor expressed particular concern about individuals pointing fingers at specific people or groups, stating that such actions are neither funny nor helpful, as they hinder the investigative process.

Lapping urged residents to report any information they have to the police, emphasizing that justice must be served through the proper legal channels.
