International Day of Democracy today: Speaker says strong democratic system guarantee of prosperous future

On the International Day of Democracy, celebrated annually on September 15 under the United Nations, Pakistan's Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, emphasized that a robust democratic system is the key to a prosperous and stable future for the nation. Democracy, according to Sadiq, revolves around people's participation in governance, built on principles of freedom, equality, and collective decision-making.

He highlighted the importance of respecting public mandate, transparency, accountability, and the rule of law in maintaining a strong democracy. Sadiq paid tribute to those who have sacrificed for democracy, noting that Pakistan's history is steeped in a relentless pursuit of democratic governance, constitutional supremacy, and popular representation.

He viewed Parliament as the cornerstone of democracy, representing the people's aspirations and legislation that benefits the public. Sadiq stressed that democracy thrives on differences of opinion, which should be resolved through dialogue and consultation rather than confrontation. He stressed that elections are not sufficient and that continuous public participation, along with respect for all societal voices in decision-making, is vital.

Sadiq acknowledged the crucial role of women, youth, minorities, and other societal segments in making democracy more representative. He highlighted Parliament's bridge-building role between the people and state institutions, with the National Assembly actively addressing public concerns via legislation and oversight. The Speaker urged young people to familiarize themselves with parliamentary systems, constitutional principles, and democratic practices, offering them opportunities for national decision-making.

He called on political forces to set aside differences and collaborate on national issues and the problems faced by citizens. Deputy Speaker Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah echoed Sadiq's sentiments, stressing that democracy guarantees the right to govern oneself and protects political freedom. He emphasized the importance of a strong Parliament, constitutional supremacy, and the rule of law for Pakistan's development, prosperity, and stability.

Shah also honored the sacrifices made by Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto for democracy, urging continued efforts to promote democratic values and address public concerns.
