Indigenous leader Raoni receives palliative care in Brazil after cancer diagnosis

Brazilian Indigenous chief Raoni Metuktire is currently receiving palliative care at his home in the heartland of Brazil after being diagnosed with cancer at the age of 94. The Raoni Institute announced this on Monday, following his hospitalization in Sao Paulo in June due to a severe intestinal obstruction. The cancer was found in his digestive system.

Raoni underwent surgery during his stay in Sao Paulo and subsequently returned to Peixoto de Azevedo, in the Mato Grosso state of Brazil. The institute emphasized that their primary concern is ensuring Raoni's well-being, comfort, and proximity to his family and community. They requested respect for his privacy, need for rest, and his family's decisions.

Raoni, a celebrated advocate for the Amazon rainforest and Indigenous rights, has been advocating for environmental preservation for decades across the globe. The institute explained that palliative care does not imply the absence of treatment; instead, it aims to manage pain and other symptoms, prevent complications, and ensure proper nutrition, hydration, medical supervision, nursing care, physical therapy, and the highest possible quality of life.

Raoni is currently resting at home with his family, accompanied by his community and specialized healthcare teams. The institute further highlighted that the care plan includes intercultural and spiritual support, honoring his Indigenous heritage and allowing traditional healers alongside medical professionals.
