In a fractured world, China and the UAE choose dialogue over division

The world faces ongoing conflicts, yet the need for peace remains constant. As divisions and barriers increase, the value of dialogue and cooperation becomes increasingly important. In addressing these issues, China and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) share a common approach. Both nations advocate for inclusive multilateralism and support global action to tackle shared challenges.

China has consistently emphasized the importance of peace, stability, and lasting security in the Middle East. President Xi Jinping recently proposed a four-point plan during talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi. This proposal seeks to strengthen regional security capacity, take a comprehensive approach to security challenges, reinforce foundations for security through development, and enhance international coordination.

Similarly, during meetings with Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and King Abdullah II of Jordan, Xi outlined China's positions on peace and stability in the region. These positions advocate for respect for sovereignty, resolving disputes through dialogue, political solutions to hotspots, peace through development, and security through cooperation.

China's Global Governance Initiative, built on five core principles, further supports this approach. These principles include sovereign equality, international rule of law, multilateralism, a people-centred approach, and real actions. The UAE also champions similar ideas, promoting multilateral co-operation and coordinated global action to address common challenges.

At the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit, Chinese President Xi highlighted the need for decisions in international affairs to be made collectively, rather than by a select few. He emphasized the importance of equal respect for all countries, regardless of size or strength, when differences arise. This perspective aligns with the UAE's commitment to strengthening engagement among emerging economies and broadening horizons for development and shared prosperity.

As Brics co-operation deepens and delivers results, China and the UAE can further strengthen cooperation, uphold multilateralism, and work towards a more just and equitable international order. The ongoing dialogue between these nations reflects a shared commitment to fostering peace and cooperation in a rapidly changing world.
