Illegal sale of municipal land sparks Randhart invasion claims

Illegal sales of municipal land are causing a stir in Randhart, a suburb of Alberton. Concerned residents claim that shacks and other structures are springing up on the land, leading to issues with water and electricity connections. The Freedom Front Plus (FF+) is urging authorities to investigate and arrest those suspected of selling municipal land.

Rudolf Herbst, an FF+ councillor in Ekurhuleni metro, states he received reports of unauthorized structures on municipal land and utility connections. Herbst also highlights that the Ekurhuleni real estate department escalated a matter regarding land invasion in Randhart Extension 2 to the Gauteng department of infrastructure and development on February 20, 2026.

As of September 10, 202 days have passed since the escalation, and the problem appears to be worsening. During his visit to the area, Herbst witnessed building work, boundary construction, water meter installations, and irregular service connections. He documented meter serial numbers and observed equipment marked "Joburg Water" and an apparent electricity connection at a streetlight pole.

Residents have reported that Ekurhuleni officials visited the affected areas and disconnected irregular meters or connections. Herbst calls for a coordinated intervention involving various city departments, the police, emergency services, legal services, and risk management. A local resident claims a syndicate is selling government-owned land in Randhart, with one individual involved identified through Facebook Marketplace.

The land is reportedly being supplied with water through unauthorized connections to the fire hydrant system. A preliminary investigation report by the City of Ekurhuleni indicates that 18 properties in Randhart are under investigation for alleged contraventions of regulations and municipal bylaws.
