IFPI Launches Initiative to Combat Streaming Fraud

Supported by AWAL, CD Baby, ADA, Symphonic and more, the "Streaming Integrity Initiative" sets new standards for streaming fraud prevention.

IFPI Launches Initiative to Combat Streaming Fraud

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the global representative body for the recorded music industry, has introduced a new initiative dubbed the "Streaming Integrity Initiative" or SII. SII aims to combat streaming fraud by encouraging participants to adhere to five core commitments. These include verifying the identities of rights owners and customers through rigorous checks, implementing content vetting processes to detect infringement and AI-related risks, detecting and mitigating suspected fraud, sharing intelligence to prevent offenders from moving between services, and continuously enhancing anti-fraud systems to counter evolving threats.

Notable industry labels such as Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, and Warner Music Group, along with various music distributors, have committed to SII. However, the largest DIY music distributor, Distrokid, has not yet joined. The initiative was inspired by the rising threat of streaming fraud, which is facilitated by advances in AI, causing significant losses to artists and platforms.

The IFPI's CEO, Victoria Oakley, emphasized that streaming fraud amounts to theft, costing artists and legitimate platforms millions or even billions each year. She also expressed hope that the initiative would lead to coordinated efforts to protect artists, songwriters, and fans.
