Hyrox apologises for allowing race to continue after athlete soiled herself

The Hyrox athletics franchise, an indoor fitness competition that combines treadmill running with strength exercises like lunges and rowing, has issued an apology for allowing an athlete to finish a race in Beijing despite soiling herself during the event. The incident occurred during a competition held in the Chinese capital on Saturday, with Australian athlete Joanna Wietrzyk visible on social media with soiled legs and shoes.

She continued using the mats and equipment and ultimately won the competition, as reported by the Hyrox website.

However, the mishap sparked outrage on social media, with many users questioning the hygiene concerns and the health of other competitors. A user on Weibo criticized the event organizers for not intervening during the race and highlighted the potential health risks for others who had to touch the contaminated surfaces. Another user accused the organizers of favoritism towards foreign athletes.

Hyrox co-founder Moritz Furste acknowledged the mistake, stating that the organizers failed to react promptly during the race and did not foresee the incident. He accepted responsibility and announced that new rules and procedures would be implemented to prevent similar situations in the future. Hyrox China acknowledged shortcomings in the regulations, which prevented judges from intervening during the competition.

Meanwhile, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV blamed regulatory flaws for harming participants' health and undermining the fairness of the competition.
