HKFP launches HongKongWeather.com – the city’s best, clearest weather platform

The Hong Kong Federation of Universities (HKFP) has introduced a new weather platform, HongKongWeather.com, designed to provide the clearest and most comprehensive weather information for the city. This platform leverages numerous official live data feeds from reputable sources including the Observatory, Environmental Protection Department, and others.

HongKongWeather.com goes beyond traditional weather forecasts by presenting data in a more understandable format. For example, it combines temperature, wind, and humidity data to deliver a "feels like" reading, offering a more accurate representation of the actual outdoor conditions. Additionally, the platform provides live recommendations for various outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming, and beachgoing, along with real-time webcam views of the city.

Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the inclusion of sunrise, sunset, moon phases, and the optimal times for "Golden Hour" or "Blue Hour" each day. The site also includes a Chinese calendar for tracking the lunar year. Visitors can compare weather records for the day and assess the risk of indoor mould growth.

For those concerned about heat stress while outdoors, the platform incorporates the wet-bulb globe temperature, which has been a subject of debate but is considered a reliable indicator. During typhoon warnings, storm data and tracking are prominently displayed. The platform also features a fun Li Ka-shing Shield tracker to monitor the city's wealthiest man's potential work-from-home status during typhoons.

HongKongWeather.com is designed with user interaction in mind. Each data box is draggable and can be arranged according to individual preferences. The platform was initially developed using AI, adhering to HKFP's AI guidelines, ensuring accuracy and speed comparable to the Observatory's own platforms. As a result of an HKFP donor's suggestion, the platform is free and ad-free, supported by HKFP members who are monthly or yearly supporters. The project truly emerged from a donor's proposal for a "real feel" temperature feature.
