Health Ministry steps up preparations as El Nino rains loom

The Ministry of Health in Kenya is intensifying preparations for anticipated El Nino rains expected between October and December 2026, with above-normal rainfall forecast by the Kenya Meteorological Department at a 99% likelihood. All 47 counties have received health advisories and directed to implement measures ahead of the rains.

This includes ensuring health facilities in flood-prone areas remain accessible and stocked with necessary supplies, preparing ambulances and emergency response teams, enhancing disease surveillance, assessing drinking water safety, and intensifying mosquito control measures. The Ministry warns that flooding could lead to water contamination, mosquito breeding, and increase the risk of diseases such as cholera, typhoid, malaria, dengue fever, and Rift Valley fever.

It also notes potential drowning, injuries from disrupted healthcare services, and increased malnutrition among children due to food supply disruption. Areas at higher risk include Mandera, Wajir, Marsabit, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, and others in various regions of Kenya. The Ministry coordinates national preparations through the National Public Health Emergency Operations Centre, collaborating with the Kenya Meteorological Department, National Disaster Operations Centre, county governments, and other partners.

Support from the World Health Organization, UNICEF, World Food Programme, and Kenya Red Cross Society is also being sought. Emergency response teams and laboratories are being prepared, with medicines, nutrition supplies, and mosquito-control products pre-positioned in high-risk areas. The Ministry urges counties to finalize preparations early to minimize health risks associated with flooding and maintain access to essential services throughout the rainy season.
