Getting Defensive: Week 2 fantasy plays led by 49ers, Eagles; top streaming defenses

Week 2 of fantasy football proved to be a challenging one for many managers. The NFL-AFL merger started earlier this year, and the high-scoring environment continued into the early part of the season. Several elite defenses showcased their dominance, but overall, the slate featured many points scored on opening weekend since 1970.

Elite defenses led the charge, with the Jacksonville Jaguars dominating Cleveland and Pittsburgh edge-rusher T.J. Watt singlehandedly making the Steelers fantasy-relevant. The San Francisco 49ers, despite playing halfway across the world, put the clamps on the Los Angeles Rams in Australia. The Philadelphia Eagles had a solid defensive game against the Washington Commanders, despite concerns about their ability to generate pressure off the edge with Jonathan Greenard out.

However, the Houston Texans and Cincinnati Bengals faced struggles. Texans quarterback Josh Allen was embarrassed by the Bills, and the Bengals' offensive line, mostly unchanged, was not impressive. Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs and Indianapolis Colts had their own display of dominance. The Chiefs allowed only 176 yards and 10 points, forcing two turnovers, while the Colts had issues throwing the ball against Baltimore last week.

As for Week 2 streaming plays, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers stood out as the best option, with rookie Caleb Douglas and Kaelon Black as potential FAs. The Los Angeles Chargers also had a strong defensive play against the Arizona Cardinals. Ultimately, it's crucial for managers to stay the course and not panic if early-week results don't go as planned.
