General Motors makes room for CarPlay and Android Auto in 2027 Silverado, Sierra

General Motors (GM) has finally discovered the perfect balance for integrating Android Auto and Apple CarPlay into its newer vehicles, despite the negative reactions from consumers. The company's latest software update for two new trucks has proven to be the ideal solution, but it remains uncertain if this compromise will be extended to other models.

A new software experience featuring Android Automotive/Google built-in is set to debut in the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and 2027 GMC Sierra. This update not only enhances the visual appeal of GM's software but also offers useful features such as call controls and even garage door opener functionality. CNBC reported that the update proactively surfaces relevant controls, including call controls and a garage door opener.

The physical controls on both vehicles remain abundant. However, the most significant development is GM's innovative approach to implementing Android Auto and CarPlay integration. In 2023, GM decided to remove phone projection systems from its vehicles while incorporating Android Automotive and native functionality into its infotainment system.

This decision has not been well-received by customers. While GM has not reversed this change in its electric vehicles, many of its other vehicles still support both platforms. The key difference is that the Silverado and Sierra will support Android Auto and CarPlay, but in a new windowed mode. The projection will appear on a section of the display, with parts of the native infotainment system appearing around the sides, allowing users to control certain aspects of the car that projection systems cannot without actually closing anything.

Colin McCormick, GM's group product manager for Google built-in, projection, and profiles, stated to The Verge that this is the "sweet spot." "We're landing in a spot where... we don't have a customer that has to decide, 'Oh, I'm going to use projection, or, oh, I want to use the native system…'" This sweet spot is expected to provide a seamless experience for users, eliminating the need to choose between projection and native systems.

It is unclear whether GM will bring Android Auto and CarPlay back to more of its vehicles, as gas-powered vehicles continue to support phone projection, which is still absent in their electric models, including the latest Chevy Bolt that launched earlier this year.
