For Des Marcus, Malaysia Day is about bringing communities together

Sarawakian singer Des Marcus believes that Malaysia Day is an opportunity to bring people together through acts of kindness, regardless of one's background or resources. Born in a family with limited finances, Des understands the value of giving back. Two initiatives he has recently undertaken showcase his commitment to fostering community spirit.

The first was an inclusive Chinese New Year gathering for members of the visually impaired community, organized alongside an events company and the Mr & Miss Native Borneo organisation. Des emphasized that support can come in many forms, not just through material resources, but also by being present, listening, and making others feel included.

The second initiative was a beach-cleaning programme in Kampung Santubong, organized with Sarawak Skills, which highlighted the impact of collective action and how small individual efforts can contribute to visible change. Des hopes that by sharing his personal experiences and cultural heritage, he can inspire Malaysians to appreciate the unique characteristics that make up the nation's diversity.
