'Bukit Kepong' brings Muar families together for Malaysia Day screening

Sarawakian singer Des Marcus believes that Malaysia Day is about bringing people together through acts of kindness, big or small. As a 36-year-old Bidayuh from Serian, Sarawak, Des understands that helping others doesn't always require money. Instead, he feels that simply being present and showing support can have a powerful impact.

Growing up in a family with limited resources, Des learned the importance of looking out for one another. In the past year, he has led two initiatives that exemplify his philosophy of kindness and community building. First, during Chinese New Year, Des organised an inclusive gathering for members of the visually impaired community.

By working with an events company and the Mr & Miss Native Borneo organisation, he helped create a space where people of all abilities could come together. Des realized that sometimes being there for someone, listening to them, and making them feel included can be just as meaningful as offering material assistance. A few months later, he organized a beach-cleaning event at Kampung Santubong in partnership with Sarawak Skills.

This programme emphasised environmental responsibility while highlighting how collective action can lead to visible results. Des believes that both of these projects emphasise the same values of togetherness, cooperation, and respect that he grew up with in his Bidayuh community. He hopes his actions will inspire Malaysians to appreciate their diverse backgrounds and contribute to building a stronger society.

Des hopes Malaysians will recognise that despite differences in culture, background, and experience, everyone has a role to play in making the country a better place. He emphasizes that Malaysia's strength lies in its diversity and unity.
