FMCSA warns trucking companies about 4 fake Motus registration sites

Federal regulators have issued an urgent warning to trucking companies regarding a scam targeting the Motus registration system. Scammers are sending emails that appear to be from the FMCSA, directing recipients to four fraudulent websites that imitate the official Motus portal at motus.dot.gov. These malicious sites attempt to trick users into updating their profiles immediately, but any attempt to do so will actually redirect them to outside destinations.

The emails use a subject line claiming an off-cycle profile update is required and urge the recipient to click a button labeled "New MOTUS Portal." This button leads to the bogus websites. Officials have warned that these fake sites lack the official .gov domain and contain all-capital lettering, which is not consistent with the legitimate service's formatting.

Carriers, brokers, and other regulated entities should be aware that Motus is used for applications or company updates and can be accessed through Login.gov. The campaign began in August 2026, and officials have not provided details on the number of recipients affected or the extent of any potential damage. To report suspected scams, individuals can contact the Federal Trade Commission, the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center, or local law enforcement.
