Finland approves second-largest defense package for Ukraine as Russia’s next brutal winter campaign looms

Finland has approved a second-largest defense package for Ukraine, amounting to €290 million, as the war against Russia enters its fifth winter. The country's President approved the aid on September 15 following a government recommendation. Finland is withholding specifics about the package's contents, delivery, and schedule due to operational security and safe transportation concerns.

This marks the 34th defense package Finland has sent to Ukraine since the invasion began, with the total value of Finnish equipment delivered to Ukraine now totaling about €3.6 billion. Finland's Defense Minister, Antti Häkkänen, stated that aid allocations are based solely on Ukraine's needs, incorporating both available military stock and new purchases.

The timing of this package is critical as Ukraine prepares for another harsh winter, during which Russia has historically intensified attacks on the nation's energy systems and critical infrastructure to heighten pressure on civilians. Ukrainian officials and European partners are also warning that Russia may continue or escalate its assaults during the coming winter.

The package includes equipment procured from Finnish defense industries, aiding both Ukraine and Finland's domestic defense capabilities.
