A new study by the Institute for Employment and Occupational Research (IAB) suggests that reducing the maximum period of unemployment benefits for older workers could save the federal agency more than two billion euros annually. Currently, the maximum duration is 24 months for those aged 55 to 57, provided they have worked at least four years in the past five years.

Shortening this period to 18 months for all older workers could result in a savings of 1.4 billion euros per year, according to IAB experts. However, this figure may be up to 20 percent higher when adjusted for current unemployment benefit values. The discussion about reducing unemployment benefit periods is expected to be reignited, with employers and economists calling for shorter durations for years.
