Factbox-Key candidates to replace ECB President Lagarde

As Christine Lagarde's term as head of the European Central Bank nears its end in October 2027, speculation has arisen about potential successors. One prominent candidate is Klaas Knot, a former Dutch central bank chief who served two full terms at the helm from 2011 to 2025. Knot, now 59, has a history of conflicting with ECB President Mario Draghi over stimulus measures, but has since aligned with Lagarde's policies.

Another option is Luis de Cos, the current Chair of the Financial Stability Board and a former governor of the Bank of Spain. De Cos, 55, is known for his pragmatic approach and evidence-based arguments. He has served as the chief economist at the Bank of Spain and has worked to harmonize banking rules globally.

Jens Nagel, head of the Bundesbank since 2022, is also in the running. Nagel, 60, has softened his stance towards the ECB, despite his predecessor's open conflicts with Draghi. Nagel supports the European Deposit Insurance Scheme and has defended the ECB's independence.

Lastly, Christine Calvino, President of the European Investment Bank, is another possible contender, though she has not publicly expressed interest in the position. Calvino, 57, is known for her effective management and public speaking skills.
