Defence scientist Dr P. Srihari has assumed the role of Director at Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in Hyderabad on Tuesday. Srihari, a distinguished academician and DRDO veteran, has been entrusted with leading one of the premier laboratories of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Educated with a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from Nagarjuna University and a Ph.D. from Osmania University, Srihari joined DRDO through the Mechanical Engineering Fellowship Course (MEFC) in 1992. He initially worked on the Multi-Mode Radar (MMR) for the LCA programme and later designed and developed a multilayer slotted array antenna, a technology that has been employed in numerous DRDO antenna projects.
Beyond radar systems, Srihari also contributed to missile development, notably serving in the Long Range Tracking Radar (LRTR) programme from 2000 and overseeing the development of the Divert & Attitude Control System (DACS) for interceptor missiles in 2003. His work on Liquid Propulsion Division's Divert & Attitude Control System (DACS) for interceptor missiles played a crucial role in the Indian Ballistic Missile Defence Programme.
Srihari's exceptional leadership was recognized when he was appointed as Project Director for the MRSAM (IAF) project in 2019, overseeing the successful induction of the first Firing Unit into the Indian Air Force in October 2021. His strategic vision and management skills have led to the establishment of complete production lines for seamless delivery of all remaining Firing Units to the IAF.
His contributions extend beyond technical achievements, as Srihari has been honored with prestigious awards such as the Agni Award for Excellence in self-reliance, DRDO award for path-breaking research, and Scientist of the Year award. He also holds leadership positions in academic and professional organizations like the Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI) Hyderabad chapter and various high-energy materials and aerospace societies.
Srihari's academic and professional journey, marked by innovation, leadership, and technical excellence, has earned him a prominent place in India's defense and aerospace landscape.
