Celine Dion: The heart goes on

Six years after her final full concert, Celine Dion made a triumphant return to the stage at Paris’s Plénitude Arena, dressed in a black Dior pleated dress. The pop icon, who had been open about her battle with a rare neurological disorder affecting her body and vocal cords, began her 26-concert ‘Celine Dion Paris 2026’ residency by singing their 1998 French hit ‘On ne change pas’ (We don’t change).

Standing in front of a packed stadium, Dion openly expressed her emotions, stating, “I made a promise to be back… So here I am, singing for you and singing for me.” This was no ordinary comeback as the French singer had spent the past six years grappling with the challenges her health had brought. The documentary I Am: Celine Dion, directed by Irene Taylor, chronicled the emotional journey of the artist who had witnessed her signature high notes slip away due to her deteriorating vocal cords.

Despite the adversity, Dion approached her Parisian return with determination and ingenuity. In her own words, she vowed to “come on stage… And my vocal cords will not scare me… and I will hit those notes because I am not brave, I am smart.” Upon her return to the stage, she proved her words to be true, hitting the notes with remarkable precision and even occasionally exceeding expectations.

Through her resilience and determination, Dion showcased that while her body may have changed, her spirit and talent remained unshaken.
