A 36-year-old Indonesian man has become Malaysia's first individual to receive a prison sentence for the minor offense of disposing of cigarette butts (PSK) in the Stulang area of Johor in February last year. According to Johor Environmental Management and Cleaning Authority (SWCorp) Director Zainal Fitri Ahmad, the 36-year-old construction worker made the PSK disposal mistake around the Stulang area last February.

However, the individual was jailed for a month starting August 28 after failing to pay a RM1,000 fine imposed by the court. Following his imprisonment, he will serve a six-hour Community Service Order (PKM) as outlined in a recent press briefing. To date, 107 cases involving PKM have been resolved in court, involving 59 local residents and 48 foreign nationals.

The total fines imposed amount to RM71,550, with community service ranging from two to 10 hours. So far, 3,358 enforcement operations have been carried out in Johor, with 3,095 Notices of PSK offenses issued. So far, 789 follow-up questionnaires have been sent to the defense attorney for further action, according to the SWCorp director.

The act of disposing of PSK in public places is considered an offense under Section 77A of the Waste Management and Cleaning Maintenance Act 2007. If found guilty, offenders can face fines up to RM2,000 or community service up to six months. Continued non-compliance with PKM orders can also lead to further penalties, including a maximum fine of RM10,000.
