ASUU suspends strike at Plateau State University

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) branch at Plateau State University (PLASU) has halted its strike following a consensus with the local government on the union's six core demands. This decision came following an emergency congress meeting in Jos on Tuesday, where members deliberated on the issues that prompted the strike on August 26, 2026.

ASUU announced the suspension in a statement signed by Dr Vincent D. Choji, branch chairperson, and Dr Lomka Iliya Kopdiya, branch secretary. The agreement was brokered between the negotiating teams of the state government and the union. The state delegation was headed by the Head of Service, Mr Steven Pam Gadong, while the union's delegation was led by Professor Aku Timothy Namo, the zonal coordinator.

The meeting was conducted at the Conference Hall of the Head of Service, where both parties reached a mutually agreeable solution concerning the six-point demands. These included the initiation of the Contributory Pension Scheme, full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU agreement, including the payment of arrears from January 2026, provision of secure and safe staff quarters, and construction of a fence around the university premises.

The union also noted that the government committed to ceasing any intimidation of union leaders, as mentioned in a letter sent to the Congress via the university registrar on May 18, 2026. Another significant point of agreement was the payment of 22 months' worth of wages, covering both the 25% and 35% wage awards.

Upon reviewing the agreement, the Congress decided to suspend the strike effective immediately, at 12:00 AM on the 16th of September, 2026. In response, ASUU instructed its members to resume all academic activities.
