Alaafin should draw aggrieved Oyomesi closer – Ladigbolu

In an interview with Wale Akinselure, 88-year-old Methodist Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu, who contested the Alaafin throne in 2022, discussed the controversies surrounding Alaafin Abimbola Owoade’s ascension to power. Ladigbolu, 84 at the time, believed he had the right to enter the race due to the Agunloye ruling house's tradition of allowing male members to contest and his long-standing involvement in Oyo's development activities.

Regarding the traditional selection process for Alaafin Akeem Owoade, Ladigbolu acknowledged that it may have been subverted when the Oyomesi (traditional council) rejected their choice and consulted Ifa, the Yoruba oracle, at the government's behest. However, he stated that such matters are currently before the courts and he would refrain from commenting further.

When asked whether the Alaafin should be chosen primarily based on traditional rules, Ifa, or government intervention, Ladigbolu acknowledged the government's overwhelming power over traditional institutions in Nigeria. He argued that finding a balance between adhering to tradition and respecting government authority appears unlikely at present, but suggested that this could change in the future.

Ladigbolu emphasized that despite the controversies surrounding Owoade's emergence, the majority of Oyo people, including the elders, youth, and the community at large, have accepted the new king. He expressed confidence that the kingmakers and Ifa will work towards reconciling with the Oyomesi members who remain in opposition, as they are mature adults capable of making their own decisions. Ladigbolu urged patience, stating that if the time comes for all issues to be resolved, they will be.
