Alaafin should draw aggrieved Oyomesi closer – Ladigbolu

In a recent interview, 88-year-old Methodist Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu, who contested the Alaafin throne, discussed the controversies surrounding Alaafin Abimbola Owoade’s emergence. Ladigbolu entered the race in 2022 because all male members of the Agunloye ruling house have the right to contest, and he believed his long involvement in Oyo's development would provide valuable insight as Alaafin.

He acknowledged that the traditional process for selecting Alaafin was subverted when the Oyomesi’s choice was rejected and Ifa consulted by the government. While he respects the ongoing legal proceedings, Ladigbolu declined to comment on the legality of the matter. He emphasized that the government’s overwhelming power in modern politics often overshadows traditional processes, making it challenging to find a balance between adhering to tradition and government intervention.

Ladigbolu believes the Oyo people are content with Alaafin Owoade and supports his legitimacy as a member of the Agunloye ruling house. While acknowledging diverse perceptions, he affirmed that the community, elders, and youth have accepted the new king and are focused on the community's progress and innovations. The controversy among the Oyomesi has led to questions about the presence of the traditional advisory structure as some members remain in court.

Ladigbolu stated that the Oyomesi's role is to advise the Alaafin, but mature adults can choose when to work with the king.
