Accra-Kumasi Expressway to be ready by 2028 if all goes as planned – MD

Engineer Francis Ahlidza, Managing Director of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway Limited, has revealed that the construction of the 175.6-kilometre highway is anticipated to be finalized by December 2028, provided no substantial obstacles arise. The physical work is slated to commence in January 2027, post the successful completion of the procurement and contractor selection phases.

In a recent interview on Citi FM’s Breakfast Show, Ahlidza disclosed that the procurement process has already started, inviting interested firms to participate in the project. This procedure is being carried out through an international competitive bidding system, divided into two stages to guarantee the involvement of qualified contractors.

According to Ahlidza, the project is on track to commence construction towards the end of the year, with construction teams expected to commence work in January 2027 and complete the expressway by December 2028. The completion of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway is projected to significantly enhance transportation and connectivity between Accra and Kumasi, two of Ghana's major economic hubs.

This development is also expected to facilitate the movement of people and goods along the busy corridor, thereby reducing travel durations and bolstering road safety for motorists. The expressway will incorporate several key infrastructure components to optimize traffic flow and safety. These include eight grade-separated interchanges, 11 vehicle overpasses, and 55 mainline bridges.

Upon its completion, the project is poised to provide a swifter and safer alternative for motorists commuting between Accra and Kumasi, thereby stimulating economic activities along the corridor.
